As we prepare for Advent, the time when we get ready to celebrate the mystery of Christmas (thanks, Godly Play, for this language!), we are bound to encounter images of Mary and the Christ Child. I love Mary and I have multiple artworks where she is featured. She speaks the Magnificat in Luke 1, praising God’s presence in her life as well as illustrating the cosmic dimensions of God’s justice, tearing the wealthy from their thrones and uplifting the poor and needy. I talked at length with my spiritual director about Mary, Gaudete (Joy) Sunday, and the Magnificat today as being core to my love of the Advent season and also foundational to my experience and devotion to the incarnated God.
