Easter Fashion: Wear the Liturgy!

Easter fashion blog.png

It’s that time of year again--the “what do I wear for Easter?” time. As a child, my mom and I used to dress up a bit to go to church each Sunday, and, while I’m not in any way a stickler about what folks wear to church (wear what you’re comfy with!), Easter was special. Conjure up an image of a little girl in a flowery Easter dress with a little purse, maybe some lace gloves and those little lace-edged socklettes that were popular in the 90s (y’all know what I’m talking about) and, of course, patent leather shoes. Some Easters in Michigan could be chilly, even snowy or icy, and on those Easters, we would have to change out of our snowboots and into our nice shoes at church in the cloakroom.

Last year, I remember being overwhelmed with sadness at the lack of Easter morning dress-up, getting just a little bit fancy for the sunrise service and Easter breakfast and worship. This year, my colleagues and I are recording our Easter service from the sanctuary of our church, as has become our custom for the festival days of the church year. So now...what do I wear?

I’ll be honest. For the first six months or so of the pandemic, I got dressed for work every day (with real pants, y’all!) and got all fancy for Sunday morning and for recording worship. But then, as the reality struck that we’d be in this pandemic for far longer than (I and others) expected, I began leaning into being comfy. Read: wearing a variety of leggings or soft pants and a nice top. Thankfully, a friend and I also decided to try out Birchbox and Ipsy to give ourselves a little treat and help us try new things while we are in this virtual world.

Enter Easter. And y’all---I’m EXCITED to put together an outfit. But I have to admit that I am most excited about one part of my outfit: my earrings!

I have not anticipated the arrival of an Etsy order so much in a while--and Hart of Clay’s polymer earrings are worth it! I am planning to wear these laurel-wreath earrings for Palm Sunday (I know, the cross is present, too, but I love the combination with plants) and then the cross and flowers for Easter morning.

I first encountered Hart of Clay earrings in a post from Young Clergywomen International, recommending liturgical jewelry, and I knew that I had found something special. The shop owner, Andi, packages her creations beautifully and with care, and each piece is slightly unique because it’s made by hand. And, she’s a friend of a YCW--even better! Love love love.

I’ll post more pictures here after Holy Week, but for now, I’m excited to dress up a little bit. I’m excited to wear liturgical art. I’m excited for each and every small piece of beauty that reminds I am called to follow the Way of Jesus, the way of love and resurrection and rebirth.
